Drying out a water-damaged home usually takes several days of steady equipment work. It isn’t a single visit and a shop-vac. Most losses need three to five days of air movers and dehumidifiers running before every wet material reads dry on a meter, and some take longer depending on what got wet.

Day one: getting the water out

Standing water comes out first, with pumps or truck-mount extraction, before any drying equipment goes in. Pulling free water fast matters because every hour it sits, more of it soaks into subfloors, baseboards, and wall cavities where a shop-vac can’t reach. Once the visible water is gone, the real clock starts.

Days two through four: air movers and dehumidifiers do the work

Air movers push air across wet surfaces to speed up evaporation, the same way a fan dries a wet driveway faster than still air. Can I just run box fans and open the windows myself?
